Ávila-Spain (08-06-2012).- The Bishop of Ávila, Jesús García Burillo, published a Pastoral Letter dedicated to the founding of the Convent of Saint Joseph yesterday, during a ceremony which took place in the diocese of Ávila.

The prelate described this letter, written on the initiative of the Discalced Carmelites of this same convent of Saint Joseph of Ávila, as “very opportune, given the incalculable value of the convent” on the year celebrating the 450th anniversary of Saint Teresa of Jesus’ foundation of her first monastery.

In his message, García Burillo presents an historical trajectory of the monastery, the reasons for which Teresa of Jesus founded it, and its current importance. In this manner he compared the reform undertaken in the 16th century with the new evangelization, which he underscored were both carried out in “difficult times for the faith and the economy.”

The Pastoral Letter is available in the region’s diocesan bookstore for the symbolic price of €1. All proceeds will be given to Cáritas, thereby giving an example of the call to solidarity that issues from the Church of Ávila.

Bishop Jesús announced that a request to the Holy See was made to declare the year of the 450th anniversary of the Convent of Saint Joseph as a Jubilee Year. This was the first foundation of Saint Teresa of Jesus. It opened its doors on August 24, 1562, and from there the Saint of Ávila began the reform of the Order of Carmel. The request is joined to the one already granted by Pope Benedict XVI for the year 2014-2015 on the occasion of the 5th centenary of the birth of Saint Teresa.
