Trujillo-Venezuela (11-06-2012).- On Saturday, June 9, the cathedral of the Venezuelan city of Trujillo hosted the enthronement of the new bishop of the diocese, Discalced Carmelite Bishop Oswaldo Azuaje.

The celebration was attended by approximately 25 bishops; the Apostolic Nuncio, Bishop Pietro Parolín; the archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Jorge Urosa; numerous priests of that diocese and the neighboring dioceses of Mérida, San Cristobal, Barquisimeto and Maracaibo; the brothers of the Order; as well as a large group of religious and faithful laity.

Once the papal bull was read and after receiving the presidency of the celebration from the Apostolic Nuncio and taking possession of the See, Bishop Oswaldo noted in his homily to the faithful that, “as of today I am a Trujillian among Trujillians; beginning today I am born amongst you…. I hope to be the shepherd this Church needs.” Before his faithful he promised not to spare strength or energy in the pursuit of a successful conclusion to the canonical process of the beatification of Venerable José Gregorio Hernández C., a Trujillian by birth and beloved by all Venezuelans.

Bishop Oswaldo is the fourth bishop of the diocese, succeeding Bishop Vicente Ramón Hernández Peña, who occupied the same See for 30 years. Bishop Oswaldo heads a very dynamic church with deep religious roots, more than 70 parishes, 100 priests, 103 seminarians, and 15 religious congregations.
